Montevideo neighborhoods for newcomers

Montevideo is Uruguay's main entry point for tourists and relocators. Each barrio has a different rhythm, price point, and commute story.

Pocitos and Punta Carretas

Beach access, cafés, and the most English-friendly service scene. Rent runs higher but walkability is excellent. Good if you want a walkable daily routine without a car.

Cordón and Parque Rodó

More affordable, strong university energy, and quick buses to the centro. Coworking and cultural events cluster here.

Ciudad Vieja

Historic core, museums, and weekend markets. Quieter at night; best for short stays or culture-first trips.

Practical tips

  • Compare listings in both UYU and USD; many landlords quote either.
  • Summer humidity peaks in January — factor AC into your budget.
  • See also Punta del Este in summer for coast seasonality.
